Create Your First Server Automation
Build an agent that retrieves a sample order through HTTP and returns the response to its caller.
Prerequisites and sample data
Complete the server prerequisites. Prepare a test or mock API endpoint reachable from the IB-X server that accepts GET and returns:
{"orderId":"ORD-1001","status":"Ready","amount":1250}
Use a test endpoint provided by your team and have its URL and any required authentication available.
1. Create the agent
Create Order Lookup. In the Workflow Parameters dialog, add a text output named OrderResponse. Connect these activities:
Start → HTTP Request → Set Workflow Output
2. Configure the request
Open HTTP Request and set:
| Property | Value |
|---|---|
| Display text | Get sample order |
| Host | Your test endpoint URL |
| Method | GET |
| Accept Format | JSON |
| Timeout | 10 seconds |
Configure authentication if needed. Set On Error to Fault so a failed request is visible as a failure.
3. Return the result
Open Set Workflow Output. Bind OrderResponse to the request activity's Result using Process Data → Activity Outputs. If Result is exposed as an object, select JavaScript expression mode and serialize the inserted reference with JSON.stringify(...) to match the text output parameter.
4. Test and publish
Save and start a Debug Automation using Agent Life Cycle. Inspect the request result and workflow output. The response should contain ORD-1001, Ready, and 1250; JSON whitespace and property order may differ.
Publish after testing, select Run from the Agents page, and inspect the resulting automation.
Troubleshooting and next steps
- Request fails: check server network access, authentication, URL, and timeout. Desktop access to an endpoint does not guarantee server access.
- Output missing or wrong type: check the output parameter and the binding to the correct activity's Result.
- Need scheduled execution: replace Start with a Time Trigger, configure it, and publish. Disable the schedule after the exercise.
Next, use Multi Assign to map response fields to workflow data, or If Else to route orders by status.
